Boustrophedon is an ancient method of writing where lines alternate direction—left to right, then right to left, and so on. This unique zigzag writing style gets its name from the Greek words bous (cow), strophe (turn), and don (manner), meaning “in the manner of a cow plowing a field.”
Ancient scripts such as the Indus script, as well as early Greek, Hittite, and Luwian scripts, show examples of boustrophedon writing.
One benefit of this writing method is that it reduces the effort needed to reposition the writing instrument, as the scribe can continue writing in a fluid, uninterrupted manner.
