The method of writing in both directions is known as boustrophedon. For example, ancient scripts like the Indus script exhibit this boustrophedon style. It was also used in ancient Greek, Hittite, and Luwian scripts. One advantage of this writing style is that it enables the writer to continue without needing to move the writing instrument far from either the right or left side of the writing surface.
